In 1955, Sacha Gordine had been producing films
in France for around ten years, including the famous Juliette ou la clé des songes directed by Marcel Carné.
He met Vinícius de Moraes, then cultural attaché at the Brazilian Embassy in Paris, who presented him with his project Orfeu de Conceição, a transposition of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice set in the favélas of Rio de Janeiro against the backdrop
of Carnival. Sacha Gordine offered to produce a film version. Vinícius de Moraes
first staged his work at the Municipal Theater of Rio in 1956, entrusting the young Antônio Carlos Jobim with composing
the original music.
In 1958, Sacha Gordine managed to finance the film
and entrusted director Marcel Camus with the task
of adapting the play. The film was shot in the hills above Rio and released the following year under the title
Orfeu Negro. In 1960, it won the prestigious Palme d’Or
at Cannes and the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
But beyond its simple success, the film, which gives pride of place to music, allowed this new musical genre, self-proclaimed “bossa nova,” to conquer music lovers around the world.
Marcel Camus once again called on Antônio Carlos Jobim to provide the musical direction. He surrounded himself with Luiz Bonfá and Roberto Menescal to compose
the various themes that would become instant hits.
In the wake of the film’s success, Sacha Gordine
and his collaborator Joséphine Rinaldi, who was in charge
of costumes for the film, decided to support the rise
of bossa nova by creating their music publishing companies Sacha Editora
and Éditions Sacha in 1961, with the help of their friend Vinícius de Moraes.
This led to the creation of a catalog of some thirty works, bringing together creations by the most illustrious artists of the time: João Gilberto, Roberto Menescal,
Ronaldo Bôscoli, Luiz Bonfá, Moacir Santos,
Ed Lincoln,
and Chico Feitosa.
Since the passing of Joséphine Rinaldi in November 2022, we have had
the privilege of continuing
to exploit these gems of the genre.
